So as to not hijack Mirfalan's Goth thread, we shall speak of Black Metal herein.
But from what I've seen, not many of you have ventured too deep into the genre's underbelly, so I'm going to officially prohibit the mentioning of CoF or Dimmu Borgir in this topic.

Given that this is an Occult forum, I will point this in the direction legitimately Occult based Black Metal - not just the crazed blasphemy (not that there's anything wrong with crazed blasphemy).

Nightbringer - stationed in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, their sound is seething with evil and atmosphere charged with an Occult electricity, and they come highly recommended, second only to:

Wolves in the Throne Room - musick borne of the emerald drear of my home away from home, Cascadia. They are not Satanic, they make no claims to any established traditions, but they call upon the ancient spirit of the land. And judging by the art created as a result, the spirit heeds the call.

Glorior Belli - part of the Lux Ferous network/collective and devoutly Luciferian, this plodding Black Metal cult from Paris is unashamed in their adherence to Luciferian Gnosticism, and they represent it well.

These are just a few of the bands currently putting out quality material. Old standbys like early Emperor and Burzum usually go without saying.

Anybody else within these walls find in underground BM a spiritual outlet?

Seriously...nobody here worships the grim and nekrokvltmusik? Put down the pop CDs and soak yourselves in the underground - you will find it rewarding!

Aw..now thats a bit unfair :( ...just 'cus we don't chillit out with the dark ones don't mean we bop to Brittney.

I've heard some of Therions stuff...meh..iz OK. I just find that the Genre seems to be to fuzzy and same same. Heavy is no problem, I cut my teeth on old school Sepultura, Morbid Angel and Napalm Death years ago. Perhaps if you could point me in the right direction I might revisit the subject :)

I don't think that Therion ever could have rightly been called Black Metal. But they do have a genuine Occult background.

I'll give you a few tracks that people have put on YouTube, some of my favorites.

YouTube - Emperor - I am the Black Wizards (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ks29jnKD4o)

YouTube - Taake - Over Bjoergvin Graater Himmelrik I (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_iJqePQs04&feature=related)

YouTube - Arcturus - Wintry Grey (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1M0D_QPWl-U)

YouTube - Deathspell Omega - Carnal Malefactor (lyrics) part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1F5TZgo5dig)

YouTube - Great American Desert - Shining Like Dusk Over Sea (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIEJJOlysDc)

(GAD is more of a blackened Doom Metal project)

Dissection's album Reinkaos is about the beliefs of the Temple of the Black Light (Misanthropic Luciferian Order). But they're more like blackened thrash.

Like what GAD and Arcturus I've heard, thanks for this.

EDIT (GAD just that song you linked, did like it, looking up more)

First part edited due to my own coffee deprivation caused idiocy ! :D

-----

There are many metal bands that convey occult symbolism, however i tend personally to try to stay away from alot of them as it is either satanic based or just generally demonic based, and whilst i might be a dark man, im a white man if that makes any sense to you.

However, bands that carry occult lyrics, metaphors, and symbolism that i listen to are as follows. Just like the word "occult" means hiden, or secret knowledge, more oftne than not, the meanings are riddled within the words, and i myself have always thought these bards and minstrels were to some degree un aware of what they were passing on, anyway i digress.

I will note bands, and albums where it is most prominent, although it should be known it is apparent in all of what im about to mention.

- Blind Guardian (Imaginations from the other side, A Night at the opera, A twist in the myth)

- Iced Earth (Framing Armageddon, The Cruicible of Man)

- Therion (Gothic Kabbalah, Secret Of The Runes, Lemuria, Sirius B, Vovin)

- The Mars Volta ( All of their work )

- Kamelot ( Parts of Black Halo, Parts of Ghost Opera)

- Ensiferum ( Scattered through their works, norse mythology)

- Falkenbach ( Scattered through their works, Norse mythology)

- Luca Turilli ( Infinite Wonders Of Creation)

-----------
That will do for now as i have to go to work.

edit: granted most of the bands i have mentioned are not "black metal" however wisdom rarely manifests itself in the form of negativity, it might masquerade as it , but it should be known theirs a difference between passion fury and zeal for those aspects, and anger and negativity.

On topic, i actually checked out a band that i read in the music thread on these forums regarding favorite bands, the band was Absu , i acquired their latest album and gave it a listen and although i cant make out all the lyrics quite yet, their latest album at least seems to revolve around mythology and occult magickal aspects.

Its worth a listen, and apparently its black metal.

Heres a link if you/anyone is interested.

ABSU is Black Metal enough, though they traditionally refer to their style as Mythological Occult Metal (if I remember correctly.

oh BM thread - nice :)

Seriously...nobody here worships the grim and nekrokvltmusik?
we do - but we're offline :D yes, Emperor and Burzum are kvlt and really don't need an introduction since they are probably the first that you'll listen to when you start with black metal - here's one from Burzum for my peace of mind:
YouTube - Burzum - Dunkelheit (Excellent Quality) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Bm-kdLwBVc)

Dissection's album Reinkaos is about the beliefs of the Temple of the Black Light...
uuuuuh I just love this album - I listened to it for more than a week every day all day long and had some grim and gore dreams - I loved it \m/ ........... they are usually classified as: Melodic Black/Death Metal (early) and Melodic Death Metal (later) - for ones that don't know them:

YouTube - Dissection - Starless Aeon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5M3cT48qMd0)

YouTube - Dissection - Dark Mother Divine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PgVfYL-3X0&feature=related)

Since I'm limited with time now, I'll just name 3 bands:

Watain - Black metal - I like them very much, especially the last album Sworn to the Dark (2007):

YouTube - Watain - Legions of the black light (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toZM00an6CU)

YouTube - Watain - Storm of the antichrist (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QgmHmBta1s)

Celtic Frost - Thrash/Death/Black Metal (early), Avant-garde (late 80s), Glam (Cold Lake) Gothic/Doom Metal (2000s) - I'm addicted to the last album especially

YouTube - Celtic Frost Os Abysmi Vel Daath (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSz-0v7tkE8)

YouTube - Celtic Frost- Ain Elohim (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ni51N42iCmo&feature=related)

YouTube - CELTIC FROST - A Dying God Coming Into Human Flesh (OFFICIAL VIDEO) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dW6RXTjm4iA&feature=fvw)

Melechesh - Black / Death / Middle Eastern Folk Metal

YouTube - Melechesh - Rebirth of the nemesis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0e86M61_08)

YouTube - Melechesh-Emissaries and the Mysterim Magnum (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJtqLvr-Leo&feature=related)

*You can find info about them here, if you don't know about this page: Encyclopaedia Metallum: The Metal Archives (http://www.metal-archives.com/index.php) ... and if you do... well Repetitio Est Mater Studiorum :D

Umbral Presence - I've been listening to this band over last few days and I like it very much - only found one place to get it from:
Umbral Presence - Caelethi I (http://wrk.rakoth.ru/caelethi_i.html)

"Agios o Satanas"

"To you, Prince of Darkness and Lord of the Earth
I dedicate this Temple:
Let it become, like my body,
A vessel for your power
And an expression of your glory!"

"With this salt I seal the power of Dark Gods in!"

"With this earth I dedicate my Temple"

Here's the best black metal bands I know of (besides some that were already mentioned)

Abigor
Messe Noir
Leviathan
Ulfur Skogur
Endless Blizzard
Artep
Necrophobic
Hellacaust
Exhausted Prayer
1349
Oracle of the Void
Enslaved by Owls
Vhernen
Thy Flesh Consumed
Saros

...another good band to check out that had a hand in the early Norwegian black metal scene is Old Funeral, though they're more deathy sounding.

Venom invented the term black metal though they themselves are not.
YouTube - VENOM - 01-Black Metal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHmzFVDjVnM)
Immortal is probably my favorite Black Metal band.

Some excellent bands have been mentioned here so far. Some of my favourites (whether or not they are merely blasphemous or actually orientated around the occult) are:

Dissection, Inquisition, Archgoat, Blasphemy, Black Witchery, Beherit, Watain, Secrets of the Moon, Ofermod, Ondskapt, Necros Christos, Nehemah, Mortem (Peru), Deathspell Omega, Ancient Wisdom etc

Also, on another note, I've been enjoying quite a lot of dark ritual ambient kind of stuff lately. I've been listening to Zero Kama, Zoat Aon, Hexentanz, Enemite, Halo Manash, Okk-uLth, Funerary Call, Darkness Enshroud, Black Seas of Infinity, Aghast etc etc.

Anyone enjoy any of these bands and projects??

I seriously recommend Enochian Crescent for everyone who has a bit, say twisted, taste and enjoys finding subliminal meanings (interest in occult is of course clear point without mentioning). For starters "Ghost of Saturn" video
- YouTube - Enochian Crescent - Ghost of Saturn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPZGMqWqbyk)

And Ondskapt. More than perfect atmosphere for trance for example. Mostly opens for those familiar with 'dark side' of the way, or so I suppose..

Hi Im new here I find this place very intreasting. I just wanted to point something out to you if I may.
Nothing wrong with death metal or thrash etc but when it comes to blackmetal you have to get rid of old concepts of metal you listened to pre Blackmetal then you will see the true beauty of the music.
what you will find particularly the old style of black metal is it is about atmosphere more than a riff to mosh to or a groove although an original black metal groove is usually loose raw and has its own entity the more you listen to it the more you will understand it.
dont dismiss it alot of metal heads do treat it as its own thing rather than compare it to say morbid angel or cannibal corpse etc.

I cant believe nobody mentioned Darkthrone, Mayhem, or Bathory.
I dont consider C.O.F. black metal, I call them faggoth. Dimmu is moving in that direction as well. I recommend Old Man's Child and Dark Funeral as well.

somewhat unrelated but check out bird from the abyss which is a kind of doom folk but on a black metal label. reeks of the occult.

I have found the topic I am very interested in but here are mentioned just noticable bends. There is A LOT of good underground black metal too.
Try:
Celestial Bloodshed
Arckanum
Corpus Christii
Horna
Baptism
Vorkreist
Svart Crown

And without occult:
Lyrinx
Austere
Sanctus Daemoneon (well they sing abou inner demons)

Occult but not BM:
The Devil's Blood (TOTBL)
Ghost

I guess that the last two bands are known to all.

burzum is good and very important but just simply isn't my favorite. one group that is interesting is crimson moon, satanic with some vampire magick in the lyrics. maybe some of you won't dig it but I think they're good.

summoning is really good and not occult related, mostly geared towards tolkien.

Janaza freakin rule. Check out Anguished if you like one-woman black metal brutality, probably the most punishing vocals I've ever heard. Thanks for mentioning the mighty Arckanum also.
