It's only wasted if it isn't still functioning or never functioned in the first place. Consider this too that you cannot fight probability. If they live a lifestyle where the variables for bad health far outweigh the good then you're just pissing in the ocean. Magic can only do so much.

Sigils are types of thought forms. A thought form will only last for a time depending on how much energy you put in it may be an hour or a year. You can also reinforce them over time by bringing them to mind and feeding them what ever sort of energy you are using. You can also build them with a time limit like a day, moon, or until a task is done. You are the one who must decide if it is a worthy effort or not. If they are not ready to go for what ever reason and want healing than I would see that as a worthy cause no matter what the cause of their illness. If on the other hand they have lived a full life and are ready to go on keeping them here just because you will be lonely or in pain with their passing than that is cruel to them. I would never think majicks to do any task no matter how great to be a waist if the cause is worthy.
