I certainly don't know it doesn't feel as if it wants to protect me.

Are you sure it's a shadow person and not some other entity?
You could try smudging the room with sage and then saying a simple spell like
''thrice around the circles bound,sink all evil to the ground'' you chant that 3xs and then say
''so mote it be'' or
''blessed be''
or a simple chant you can do is ''um moni paud me um'' it is supposed to take away all evil and return it to it's sender.
Those are basic protection chants you can try.The sage is supposed to cleanse all negativity from your room.You could try Dragon's Blood for protection.Then,Amethyst is good for protection and Quartz crystal also clears out negative energies.I also think a dream catcher would be very good and Lavender helps with calming and soothing as well as sleep.

Phew , sounded so awful...
Hopefully he will get better soon...Sounded a bit like post traumatic stress, with microslips during the day , from utter exhaustion or something much worse...
Hope things turn out well for him...
