    Default Hello

    Hello everyone

I'm very new to occult things. I have had an interest in it for about 15 years, but was never able to get in touch with people to learn more about it. hope to be able to start my journey into occult now.

    Hello Japster.

I too, have only but recently joined this forum and hope to be able to assist and learn when and what I can, respectively. I'm sure there are a few learned members here for such purposes.

Have you read any of the works of Plato?
A great story of his, which has always inspired me to look beyond what is seen as the 'norm', is 'The Simile of The Cave', from Plato's 'The Rebublic'.

    Have you heard of it?
It supplies the reader with a fascinating insight into the fundamental psychology surrounding commonly perceived reality and is a 'must read' for any budding initiate into occult knowledge.

I have read a lot of books on the LHP, a lot of stuff from ONA.

I have read a couple of books on choas magic, sigil magic, astral projection, but nothing of Plato, do you have any books in pdf format, or know where I might be able to download it.

I have never performed any rituals or spells though. Would like to learn and try it though.

With the greatest of respect to you, I would seriously suggest aquiring all your material from physical books on the subject. Not only will you be guaranteed an uncorrupted source, you will further develop some much needed skills that are often overlooked by the modern initiate and, you will find that in but a short space of time you will have built an impressive and extensive personal library of constant and invaluable at-hand reference material.

Incidentally, what are 'LHP' and 'ONA' short for?

    Regards, Seventh.

To answer Seventh's question, LHP refers to "Left Hand Path", and ONA is "Order of the Nine Angels", if I'm not mistaken. Oh, and welcome to OF.

I must ask, however, why it is imperative that one read anything from the Republic? I have a degree in philosophy, and while I understand Seventh's reference to Plato's "Cave", I must say that I have personally found reading the classical Greek thinkers, particularly post-Socratic, to be a sometimes necessary burden for someone with more occult interests. I also feel that similar themes are found elsewhere and in more accessible formats than what Plato outlines. However, if you are at all interested in looking to ancient Greek sources for inspiration, I'd recommend the works of Heraclitus ("The Art and Thought of Heraclitus" can be purchased from most better bookstores, online and offline), and essential aspects of his philosophy can be found by doing a Google or Bing search. You may find his notions of the divine Logos and reconciliation of order within chaos interesting, particularly if you are working within a Chaos Magick paradigm. And yes, you should be able to find the essence of Plato's work that Seventh mentioned online as well.
