Default What Is The Real Truth about Aleister Crowley?

Ive heard many stories about this man, mostly bad, but then his followers usually say the bad things aren't true. Does anyone who has an open, honest, and unbiased ability to tell the facts want to tell the real truth about this man, whether good or bad?

What Iza said. Plus he was an excellent chess player and a mountaineer of some note.

He wasn't a particularly nice person but he was, I think, very sincere in what he said and tried to achieve.
He was a very complicated individual, and it's extreamly difficult to sum him up in a few forum posts.

If you have any particular questions about particular stories, do ask and I'll see if I can answer them- or for more detail from more knowledgable people try the - 'The home of the Aleister Crowley society'.
(Top tip- DON'T start a post with anything along the lines of "So this Crowley chap- he was a Satanist, wasn't he?"- you'll get some very sarcastic responses. They play seriously.)

Otherwise there are some good biographies of him out there- 'Perdurabo' by Richard Kaczynski is a good place to start.

Ah. Had a look in the FAQs, didn't see that one.
Where are the terms and conditions again, please?

Crowley was a Thelemist not a Satanist.
He not only wrote a million books on modern occult and magick, but also founded Thelema, was a mountain climber, great chess player, went to Cambridge University, was a member of the Golden Dawn, was a world traveler, and became a pop icon.

As we all know, using heroin is quite addicting and there are few people that escape its grip. Crowley's drug use was not recreational but intended towards Altered States of Consciousness . . . didn't work out quite the way he planned. A great treatise on this is his fiction book "Diary of a Drug Fiend" and excellent read for other others reason besides the drug references.

Aleister Crowley is the greatest Magus the modern World has seen, he is well worth researching.
