Strange things happen

First of all, I am sorry if this was the wrong place to put this, so if is the wrong place, I kindly ask the mods/admins to move it to an appropriate place.
So, now, the story begins :)
One night, a friend and I were taking a stroll through this paved forest and all of a sudden, a shadow stretched out for us from the darkness. I know it sounds ridiculous, but there wasn't any light source behind the shadow. The shadow went from the darkness. After that incident, my friend had lost his shadow and his usually calm nature. He completely flipped out and started saying things like "We're gonna die here, please protect me" and "The shadows are choking me".
Some time after that we encountered one of those grotesque things like the ones mister Barlowe likes to paint. You know, those big, bulky lumps of flesh put together, stretching over 7 feet, and stinking like rotten flesh. We ran like hell from that forest.
Another funny thing is that my above mentioned friend was taking a walk earlier that month and something grasped him and screamed something in his ear with a eerie voice. I can't recollect what it said to him, and I can't get in touch with him right now because it is almost half past 3 in the morning here :)
On another stroll through that place (this time during daytime and with his girlfriend accompanying us) he "challenged" whatever it is in there to fight him with all their might. He hasn't been the same ever since.
What could possibly those occurrences mean?

I highly doubt that, because, apart from a couple of things, I consider myself a highly rational person and am viewed as such from most of my peers, so I don't think that would be the case. Thanks for replying :)

I meant rational in a way that I am not prone to mass hysteria and that sort of things.

I am not superstitious, I just asked what would the possibilities be because those phenomena are something the world of physics can't explain properly. Also, I'd like to say that I have a really open mind for all kinds of experiences.
And the Asmodeus thing of which you may have read in my introduction thread is more of a mental exercise in which I would ask him, a different part of my consciousness, a better me in fact, questions about things like what to do next, is he satisfied with the decisions I have made etc.

Another possibility would be, that "your friend" has self-esteem issues - that he doesn't think others see him as special and/or important, and interprets this to mean that he must be unimportant and of no value, i.e. that he is "worthless". If this is the case, then "your friend" may be developing a habit of exaggerating what he is actually experiencing, turning mundane events into strange, exciting and mysterious adventure tales.

If you are really asking: "what, if anything, is the significance of 'seeing 7 foot tall phantoms', or of 'fighting with shadows', in occult traditions?", then perhaps you might find somewhat of an answer by researching the "qlipoth".

Some people can see energy, and sometimes things may manifest but generally this manifestation is short lived.

If you saw it with your minds eye and you encountered things like this, it is possible it was real. If it was a combination of your eyes and your mind's eye, it is possible it was real.

It is also possible it could simply be a hallucination or some sort of weird sub-conscious thing surfacing, as this tends to happen in the wild.

It also happens that there are natural gateways in the wild where ley lines converge into vortexes, again this is looking through the mind's eye.

Most things though aren't strong enough to produce the results you are speaking of, simply because they don't have a body. It is possible, but not probable.
