    Default Learning The Runes

    Greetings All;

    In learning the Runes it is the best to learn the history and mythology first and then to learn the Runes.

    The Elder Edda and Prose Edda are there to help in that. NorthVegr has alot of good info as well as Rune-Net, Bob Oswald-The Runemaker.
    I have found Nigel Pennick's book on the Runes and their history to be a good read as well.

    One should also learn how to apply the Runes in your everyday life. Once you start on the journey with the Runes their energies are attracted to you on an everyday basis.

    Divination with the Runes should pretty much be the last thing you learn with them.

    Default Runes

    Greetings All;

    I found a tidbit in a Rune book by Nigel Pennick that I would like to share with the forum since it is relevent to the subject matter.

    "A rune is literally a mystery containing the secrets of the inner structure of existence. Every character that we call a rune is a storehouse of knowledge and meaning. But, we can access the wisdom only after diligent study of runecraft in all it's aspects."

    Never really looked into Rune Magick before. What kinds of effects would you expect from good rune Magick? Does it have things exclusive to itself?

    Default The Runes

    Greetings;

    Quoting Nigel Pennick from his book 'The Runes'- " Unlike the types of symbols used in many other spiritual traditions, the runic system is dynamic, flexible, creative, and capable of further development. The Runes can be understood at differant levels. At the most superficial level, their archetypal meanings are fixed. Reality, however is essentially fluid, and so each time the runes are used they react in a new way toward this fundamental reality. Each new day brings new experiences and new relationships. No time and no place can ever be exactly like any other, before or afterward and, accordingly the action of the runic archetypes is continually being expressed in fresh ways."
    "The usefulness of the runes therefore lies not only in their individual meanings, but also in their ability to be combined in a vast number of ways to give composite meanings that reflect underlying realities."

    I will add this myself- You need to hear their song as well as read their words.
    Runes are a way of life and involve more than just so-called Rune Magick.

    I think that the words expressed by you ring truer than the quote by the author and this pertains in all Magick and in life

    I'll be frank: the Eddas don't help with the learning of the runes in this day and age unless you're able to comprehend the translations with ease, which I find quite difficult to do. They are not a very good starting place for a complete newbie. A general introduction to their purpose, uses, and practices would benefit anyone before reading the Eddas.

    Personally I found them not only to have a power of their own...but also to be connected to cosmic energies and channels for said energies.
    I found it so far most fruitful to attune to only a few runes and work a lot with those selected ones. But on the other hand I do not do divination with them.

    As for effects: Currently I work on some protection/banishing techniques. Even though I did not need to use it in a really serious encounter it seems to be quite effective so far.
