Now that was different. He put the love spell here, recommending it to others. If Gawain would have said: "You should all try Tarot it's supercool try it" then I would have held another one of my inferiority complex-creating speeches. But he asked for help, and perhaps implied that he thinks it works for himself. He didn't go "Yeah it works for everyone it's universal just try it out." If you don't like Tarot, that's fine. But this thread's title isn't, "What do you think of Tarot?", it is "New to Tarot". And the first post isn't "Whaddaya think of divination by Tarot?", it is a request for help. So please, if you want to complain about Tarot, open a separate thread.

Is there really a need to use a card as a significator with in the spread? I've seen them listed in most lay outs I've seen but what's the point of it? Is one of the cards supposed to speak to me, as it comes to relating to the readee? If I do a reading for myself, do I really need to use one? I haven't so far.

I would as since it represents you, it has your energy and the reading will be more to the point. If you do a three card spread or a one of course you don't need it. I use a Gypsy deck and the card that represents me or a male is already in the spread.

If I was doing a five card spread for me, wouldn't my energy already be in the cards, seeing as they're coming from my hand?

Yes but the significator draws the energy in as it is a sort of guide for your intuition, or entities that are helping. It is up to you of course, you have to do what feels right for you.
